Tragic accident of Stuy’08 and Stuy’09 swim team members
March 19th, 2006 by stuy96If it was ever time to write a blog, I decided to write one now.
If any of you out there in the Stuyvesant Community may not have
heard there was a tragic accident that killed 4 people on the NY
State Thruway. Two of whom were:
16-year-old Kevin Kwan, a Stuy’08 sophomore
and
14-year-old April Lao, a Stuy ‘09 freshman.
Both are members of the Stuy varsity Pirates and Penguins swimming teams.
The driver of the car, Kevin’s mother, Shuk Tse, 47, of Flushing, Queens,
and Kevin’s younger brother, Douglas Jiang, 10 also did not survive.
The 4 children were teammates on the Flushing Flyers Aquatic Club run out of the Flushing YMCA on their way to a state tournament near Buffalo with their parents.
The only people to survive are April’s mother, Karen, and younger brother, Andy,
who are still recovering at the hospital.
We wish our condolences to the families, the teams, and everyone in the Stuyvesant Community who were to recognize and experience such talented individuals. Our future will continue to remember what they have always left behind.
Here some follow up news stories that may add some detail to a tough situation.
Media coverage is always hard to gauge, especially how the articles try to drive an emotional side of the story.

Anyone from the swim teams know what we should or could do to remember them best as alumni? The men’s team has been reigning champions for about 5 or so straight years and the women’s team has been highly competive going far in the playoffs every year following a 1992-1999 7 consecutive year streak.
All the best,
Andy
